Selling and Buying is Easy on Carousell.

It only takes you less than 30 seconds to sell your used items on Carousell.

We’re committed to inspiring the world to start selling, and that begins with making it convenient for you. To help you get started, we’ve put together a few tips to start selling and earning that extra income.

How to sell on Carousell: 4 simple steps

Here’s a quick look at how to sell on Carousell. With these four easy steps, you’re on your way to earning some money:

  1. Open up your Carousell app and tap on “Sell”.

2. Take a picture (or a few) of the item you’re selling.

  1. Fill up the basic details of your item.
  2. Fulfill your order via meet-ups or mailing.

Step 1: How to start selling on Carousell?

Launch the app and start by tapping on ‘Sell’ (the ‘+’ icon) within the app.

You just have to tap on it to open up the camera. Super easy, super quick.

Let’s get right to step two!

Step 2: How to take photos of your item on Carousell?

Ever heard how first impressions matter? It’s the same on Carousell.

Your pictures are the first thing buyers see when they browse on our marketplace, and the most attractive images get the highest views.

To sell better, here are some useful tips when taking photos:

  • Use natural lighting as much as you can so your photos are well-lit. Sunlight is your best friend here.
  • Use a contrasting background, so your item stands out. Presentation is key and your item should be the center of attention.
  • Upload at least 4 photos to show different angles of your item to demonstrate the condition and authenticity of your item.

Once you finish taking your photos, select the ones you want to use and tap “Next”.

Step 3: How to fill up basic details of my items?

Here’s your chance to convert casual browsers into serious buyers! Simply convince them that your item is indeed what they are looking for.

First, select a category suited for your item. This increases the chances of buyers looking for what they need.

A good title and description help users find your items too!

Write short and clear titles – Buyers will not spend more than 3 seconds to read your title while browsing the marketplace. Being concise always helps!

Describe, describe, describe. Put yourself in the buyers’ shoes and detail all the necessary info you would want to know before buying it!

Remember that buyers are not always looking for brand new items in perfect condition. Preloved items are sought after too!

Include the brand name, original price, and why you’re selling in your description.

Then, your next step is deciding on a price. How much do you want to get from selling your item?

If you already have a price in mind, that’s perfect. If you don’t, look around and compare! A quick search on Carousell will show how much others are selling similar items for.

We’ve also made it easier for you with Price Suggestion – When listing, we’ll provide you with the prices of visually similar listings to aid in pricing.

Pro-tip: Do consider paying for shipping too. Items with free shipping often sell more quickly!

Step 4: How to fulfill my orders?

You now have a buyer that is interested in your item. That’s great!

What’s next? The best part of selling – getting the payment.

How do I receive payment from a buyer?

On Carousell, we allow buyers and sellers to connect through a chat, thus both buyers and sellers can agree on which payment method would be most suitable for both parties! Here are a few suggested methods to receive payment:

  • Carousell Protection (Highly recommended!)
  • Cash on delivery/Meet-up
  • Bank transfer

What is Carousell Protection?

Carousell Protection is an in-app payment feature that allows payment for items bought on Carousell through the supported payment methods.

Enable Carousell Protection when you sell to ensure buyers commit to their purchase!

How to buy on Carousell:

Here’s a quick look at how to make purchases on Carousell! We’re going to take you through the basic steps to buying, how to get the best deals, and how to be well-protected during transactions. Spoiler: it’s super easy!

Step 1: How do I start buying on Carousell?

Pro tip! You can use the filters to narrow down the search results for a more accurate find. You may also ‘like’ the item and revisit it at a later date through the heart symbol on the top right corner of your profile.

Through these simple methods, you can easily find what you’re looking for!

Step 2: How do I make a deal?

First things first, read the description on the listing of the item you like! If it looks okay, go ahead and start a chat with the seller of the item.

Pro tip! Always remember to always ask for more information and photos to make a more informed decision! Use the in-app camera function to ask for more photos from the seller.

Step 3: How do I deal safely?

Safety first!

Ensuring that you have a safe and well-protected shopping experience is our top priority! Here are our 3 most important tips to dealing safely on Carousell.

Buying on Carousell is that easy! Once you’ve received your item, go ahead and ‘follow’ the seller’s account to stay updated on future listings that you may be interested in.

How do I buy with Carousell Protection?

Before we get into the simple steps of buying with Carousell Protection, let us give you a quick rundown on what it is!

Now that you have a better understanding of Carousell Protection, here are the steps to ensure a well-protected and smooth transaction.

Step 1: Launch your app and open your settings.

Step 2: Set up your payment methods on your profile. Choose to pay by FPX or credit/debit card.

Step 3: Look out for listings with the “Protection” logo to identify listings that are Carousell Protection enabled, or simply ask the seller to enable Carousell Protection for your listing.

Step 4: Tap on ‘Buy Now’

Step 5: Choose your preferred dealing method (mailing or meet-up) and payment method. Ensure that your mailing address is correct. Apply any discount codes available and tap on “Make Payment”.

Step 6: If you have chosen for the item to be mailed to you, track your delivery progress in-app, and if you have chosen to meet-up, simply meet up with your seller within 7 days and do ensure that you check your item during your meet-up.

Step 7: Final step! Once you have received the item, make sure that you tap on “I have received my item” so that the payment will be released to the seller!

Things to note when using Carousell Protection!

  1. If you use Carousell Protection, do take note that as a seller, you do not immediately get payment from the buyer. Carousell holds payment until the buyer confirms they have received the item.
  2. Carousell Protection is absolutely free for all sellers
  1. When you use Carousell Protection as a buyer and you face issues with your purchase, raise a dispute with your seller before the order is completed and choose to either get a refund or an exchange.

What should I look out for?

Happy Carouselling!

Everyone wins when we all pitch in

Carousell is where it is today because of all of you – enterprising sellers with unique and rare items, sharp-eyed buyers who enjoy going off the beaten track, and more.

In times like these, it’s important we do not lose sight of how we can help one another as a community.

Many users are not as lucky as the rest of us in being able to access the items they need.

We invite all of you, whether you’re veteran sellers or have never tried selling before, to list affordably-priced items. These items can help impacted and vulnerable users carry on with their lifestyles as usual.

How can you best help buyers in need?

Price affordably

Take reference from retail prices. If your item is second-hand, price at 70% of the original price or lower to account for depreciation or wear/tear. Consider vulnerable segments who may need the item you’re listing.

List items that can best assist buyers to continue life as usual

This list is not exhaustive. Do give more if you have the means.

  • Medical essentials, e.g. surgical masks, N95 masks, alcohol swabs, and thermometers
  • Cleaning essentials, e.g. hand sanitizers, anti-bacterial wipes and disinfectants
  • Family essentials, especially for babies-and-kids-related needs, e.g. milk powder, diapers, educational toys for babies and children and baby carriers
  • Home and living essentials, e.g. rice cookers and hot water flasks
  • Ways to develop new skills and spend time at home productively, e.g. self-improvement books, board games for the whole family, photography equipment, or baking equipment

List with Carousell Protection

In this time, buyers prefer secure transactions and shipping instead of meeting up. Carousell Protection safeguards both buyers and sellers by providing a safe platform for use.

A small gesture can go a long way in enabling others to carry on life as normal, and also helping a little in making ends meet. When we all pitch in, Everyone Wins.

Playing our part in this time of need

In light of the latest novel coronavirus developments, Carousell would like to encourage our users to look out for one another, and consider those in need of essential items. We assure our users that we are taking steps to battle unfair profiteering on our platform. This includes, but is not limited to, surgical masks, N95 masks, hand sanitizers, and tissue paper.

At the same time, we have consolidated information and tips from credible sources such as Ministry of Health Malaysia and The Straits Times that we hope may help you in this time of need.

Help others out when you can

In these times of need, we should look out for one another and especially those in need. Aside from not overpricing listings of essential items, we encourage users to also list excess essential items for free to help others out.

“I just feel that in times of need, we need to help one another. I pity those who need [masks] but can’t get or afford it, so I decided to buy from the resellers and give it out for free to those who need it, paying it forward. Hopefully, it makes a difference in people’s lives”. – Carouseller @kev.h

“We want to do our part to help the community in need and to inspire more people to lend a helping hand during a crucial time.” – Carouseller @carwerkz.com

Buy and sell responsibly

Panic-buying items and stockpiling will only deprive others who really need these items. Please do not rush to stock up on essential supplies.

If you wish to transact on Carousell, we encourage you to have your items mailed or delivered to you instead of opting to meet up. Consider using Carousell Protection to safeguard yourself and your transactions.

In the case users prefer meeting up, the Carousell Protection team advises our users to:

  1. Avoid meeting up at crowded places and meet promptly to reduce risk of exposure;
  2. Avoid close contact and exchange of cash;
  3. Maintain good personal hygiene before and after your meet-up by washing your hands or sanitizing thoroughly.

Learn more about which masks are appropriate for which situations

As shared in The Straits Times’ article, masks are meant to be worn only by people who feel unwell. The purpose of wearing one is to prevent the passing of a virus from the wearer to other people. It does not serve as automatic protection against the novel coronavirus.

If you insist on wearing a mask, wear a surgical mask instead of an N95 mask. Surgical masks are meant to block large-particle droplets and splatter from reaching the wearer’s mouth and nose, and reduce exposure of the wearer’s saliva to others. N95 masks, on the other hand, help to filter airborne particles and, by design, would make it difficult for people to breathe in if they are worn properly. The Straits Times’ article here delves into the specific differences.

Remember that personal hygiene is the most important step in staying safe and healthy

Ultimately, paying attention to personal hygiene is our best bet at combating viruses. Frequent hand-washing with soap and not touching your face is encouraged.

Join us in battling overpriced listings of essential items on Carousell

As new listings and accounts pop up by the hour, users can also play their part by reporting overpriced listings with the reason <Mispriced listing>, as these flags have now been placed at top priority. Carousell is working closely with relevant regulatory and enforcement agencies to review listings if needed. Listings with unreasonable pricing will be asked to observe corrective action or will be taken down.

Meet Khairul and Anur, the couple behind @krlbrands

Tell us more about your Carousell business.

My wife and I run a local label called krlbrands. We sell custom made home decor products. These products are designed by us. We also upcycle old materials to make them new again.

Above: Map of Johor, christmas cushion

Are you selling on Carousell full-time or part-time?

We are doing this part-time. I am an engineer by day, and my wife is a geologist.

How did you get started?

I started my first online business in 2008 selling my graphic designs.

At that time, there was no Carousell and I was selling my designs on Facebook.I was single at that time and had no experience in design. But I was so intrigued by design, I taught myself by learning online and getting inspiration from other designers. As an outlet, I would just showcase my designs on Facebook, and I started getting requests from my friends. 2008 – 2013 were the years of learning, and setting the foundations of what would later become a business.

In 2013, I decided to venture into product design – such as home decor.

Interestingly, my mother is a tailor. She often had leftover cloth from making clothes. I collected her leftovers and made them into crafts like cushions, knick knacks and more. I enjoyed the process of upcyling and making the old new again. 2013 was the year I started investing more into this hobby.

When did you join Carousell and what’s the story behind?

We joined Carousell in early 2015. It was also the year I married my wife.

How did you find out about Carousell?

My wife and I had a booth at a flea market in Johor. We saw that our neighbour at the next booth had an empty table with just flyers. Out of curiosity, we asked more and we found out that they were selling on Carousell and directing their business online!

As an entrepreneur, we also wanted to explore and try a new platform. At first, we thought Carousell was more for preloved fashion. But after looking in the “Art and Crafts” category, we saw that there were not many sellers. This was when we realised that there was an opportunity.

How has your experience been on Carousell so far?

Before Carousell, I sold primarily on Facebook and Instagram. These two mediums are not so suitable for businesses, especially back then. The user experience lacked the features needed for selling.

I found Carousell’s features helpful for sellers– from the “reserved” button to chatting, I like how Carousell makes the selling experience seamless.

How do you handle a full-time job and your business?

It’s really with passion. In the day I work, and when I go home I design. During lunch hour I reply customers, and on the weekends we do postage. But I love what I do and this keeps me going.

We do all our production in our house, and even have a designated “creative room”.

How was Carousell been as a source of income?

It is different for every month. On a good month, I earn up to RM 300. What we do is considered a niche market, and it requires time to customise each product.

What do you use the money for?

Honestly, we use it to sustain our cost of living. If we have extra money, we buy from other makers as well – such as props that we use for our photoshoot. I want to support and give back to the makers community. So this is my way of giving them a shout-out.

Where do most of your sales come from?

Right now Carousell is the platform that brings in the most sales for us. We have about 5,000 followers on Carousell. Unlike Instagram, these are potential customers and not just commenters.

The people who buy from us are from all over Malaysia – mostly from KL, Selangor and Sarawak. In Johor, we don’t get as many customers. This trend and aesthetic has yet to pick up here. But being a born and bred Johorean, I hope it catches on.

What are your future plans for krl brands?

I hope that in 10 to 15 years we can open up a physical store in Johor or KL. We also hope to venture more into event decorations – such as designing a picnic set or a candle-light dinner.

I use Carousell to fund my wedding

Meet Janice (@rainybaxxshoe) , a 26 year old Carousell veteran who’s sold over 200 items, ranging from clothes, beauty to electronics and gadgets! Let’s hear her Carousell story.

Are you a full-time Carouseller? What were you doing previously?

I just started working full-time, and selling online is my side income since college.

What inspired you to use Carousell?

I started using Carousell as I was already an online seller on other platforms. I started selling online when I was just 18 years old. And as time passed, I researched other platforms to buy and sell things. My room looked like a rat’s house/ warehouse and I felt a need to declutter my items.

I’m currently planning for my wedding and I use Carousell to source for wedding items, as well as to fund my wedding by selling stuff I don’t need. Everyday before going to bed, I’ll browse Carousell to try my luck if I can find shoes, gowns or make-up for my wedding.

Your most memorable deal on Carousell?

I found two pairs of air Jordan kicks for my fiance and I at a really reasonable price. The market price is about RM 2,500  for 2 pairs, and I snagged it at RM700 for both. We are both sneakerheads so we incorporated our sneakers into our wedding photoshoot!

I love limited edition and quirky stuffs so if Carousell has higher chance of getting it, why not?

What do you sell on Carousell?

I usually sell clothing, bags and shoes – both preloved and new. I would say I’m just decluttering my goods at home and sometimes doing drop-shipping or pre-orders. I’ve also recently “expanded” my business beyond Johor Bahru to Singapore. After all, I just need to cross a bridge to Singapore to deliver goods to my Carousell customers there.

How has Carousell been as a source of income for you? What do you use the money for?

I would say a range between RM 100-300 per month. There’s no cost for selling as there are no loyalty or membership fees. The money I earn goes into my wedding fund! After all, it’s not cheap to get married, and every dollar counts.

Any tips on how to sell better on Carousell?

Price items accordingly and not at RM 0. Buyers don’t like asking and get shocking price that they can’t afford. Take good photos.

What are your most memorable experiences on Carousell?

Yes! I’ve made a few friends on Carousell – most of them are still friends with me till today.

The most memorable one would be a buyer and seller named Arron. I bought something from him as per usual. On another occasion, I visited my friends who were part of a live band in Penang. To my surprise, Arron was one of their band members. He had a beautiful voice and was stylish in person.

It was such a serendipitous moment! Carousell has helped me make friends across cities – whether it is Singapore, Johor, or Penang; I feel like I am part of a bigger community here.

“The best and memorable deal moment was when I was about to move back to my hometown in another state, I had a few big furnitures that could’ve been a hassle to bring them back with me and it was such a life-saver having the access to Carousell. The fun part was meeting all the unique individuals who came to pick up the furnitures (It was funny how they almost forgotten why they were here once they started playing with my cat), even though it was a short encounter with them, carrying and loading those heavy tables and shelf into their cars 👏🏼. It’s such a fulfilment being able to find those furnitures a new home and meeting those lovely individuals. 😊 Thanks Carousell ! Cheers.” <pantone.496c>

“The most memorable experience I had on Carousell was when I had to do a meet-up and my seller’s phone died.. I asked a seller to meet up with me and we exchanged phone number. I was stuck in traffic jam, so I sent over a message to let her know I was going to be late. When I reached our meet-up spot, I called her again, but it directed to voicemail. I thought she might have gone back. However, I know this seller and met up with her before, she’s friendly and I know she wouldn’t just go back without leaving a message right? So i walked around the ENTIRE shopping mall to find her. Just when I thought she left, I saw her from afar and she saw me too! So I ran over and apologize that I was late. She then told me that her phone’s battery ran out, hence she was not able to answer my calls vice versa. She’s so friendly and waited for me for so long! Luckily, we met by chance. 😊 Glad that I’ve built a mutual trust with her through Carousell.” <bananar>

“Dear Carousell, firstly, I wanted to say thank you so much for creating a really great app. Initially, I was not sure if I should sell my items on Carousell. Eventually, Alhamdulilah, I started receiving offers for many of my items. It’s so easy to communicate with sellers and buyers here. I’ve sold and bought so many items with other Carousellers. I am so grateful to a point where I can’t explain, and only god can. Alhamdullilah thank you so much Carousell.” <leyaa93>
