Maxinne Watchon: Avid Carouseller and PhD Neuroscientist

The people Maxinne has come to meet on Carousell has been a welcome break from the usual routine of Uni, helping her learn to say goodbye to her clothes – knowing they’re going to a loving-place.

Celebrating 18 months with Carousell with an Insta dedication post: “My original plan when I first started was to declutter and simplify my closet. But after selling over 480 items, I’ve definitely achieved something much more. To meet so many people, to hear their stories on why they buy on carousell, it warms my heart and makes me consciously aware that I’ve done my part for the environment: to keep clothes and unnecessary things out of landfill. Thanks @carousell.au for this opportunity “

Tell us a little bit about yourself

Currently I am a full time PhD student from the University of Sydney working in neuroscience, particularly in neurodegeneration. I love being surrounded by positive vibes, or I love being able to give positive vibes to those who need it.

I get inspired by many things and many people. My first and main form of inspiration is in my family. They each hold a connection to what makes me who I am, but also something that I lack but help me to become.

My second form of inspiration is in nature. I love going for hikes and coastal walks and when I am out and about, I appreciate that I experience this wonderful world and what it offers.

My main hobbies consist of music (I love to sing), avid reader and love beauty and fashion.

Tell us why and how you’ve discovered your passion in neuroscience?

It all started when I was in high school. You know when you’ve watched a documentary and it transports you to binge watch a further 10 hours of the same topic?

That’s was me with neuroscience. Millions and millions of brain cells communicating with each other and other parts of our body to help us function in our day to day.

But my passion for neuroscience really blossomed once I started my career in research. We learn in high school how the body functions. Once I started research, we try to understand when the body, particularly the brain, starts to lose its normal function.

My motivation to continue research in neuroscience is when I met patients of the disease I work on (Machado-Joseph Disease).

It is such a devastating (and fatal) disease that robs you from performing everyday tasks like walking and eating.

It makes me all the more determined to understand this disease and help find a treatment.

How long have you been using Carousell? Do you remember why you originally started using Carousell?

I started using Carousell inJanuary 2016. I’ve always had the idea of selling my items, I just never had the backbone to initiate it.

So when I had holidays before uni started, there was really no excuse! I began to browse on Carousell to see if I could sell a few items, and here we are today !

Have you had any interesting chats with other Carousellers? Any stories you have to share?

I vividly remember a particular buyer who purchased HEAPS items off me at one time. For any carouseller, you jump for joy when you get multiple purchases.

But when I started to talk to this buyer more and more, I was able to hear and understand her story.

She had recently moved out of home and wasstarting a new life for herselbout moving out from home and starting a new life.

Not having much money and basically having nothing once she left home, I decided to help.

Rather than seeing this as an opportunity to gain money and declutter, I saw this as an opportunity to help.

Another conversation I had was with this amazing person who had wanted to advice how to sell on carousell.

She sounded pretty defeated that after a few months of starting on carousell, no one purchased any of her clothes. At this point in time, I had just been recognised as the recommended seller for the month.

So I gave her tips as to how I started off and what things to sell, how the photos should look etc. She seemed optimistic about this.

Not even a week later, she messaged me saying someone purchased a couple of items off her and was thanking me.

I definitely felt so happy for her, but happy I got to help another carouseller.

Has selling on Carousell been a good source of side income for you?

Before I started selling my preloved clothes on Carousell, my closet was bursting with pieces I hadn’t put on in months or even years! I was balancing on a tightrope trying to manage my budget, Uni, work and friends.

As much I hate saying goodbye to any item of clothing, I’m glad they’re going to someone who will love them as much as I do.

Even better, I now have more money in my pocket to enjoy the fun things in life. Carousell is the perfect solution for full-time uni students who find it difficult to juggle uni-life and work.
